Gabriel Joseph Hon was almost 22 when he died instantly in a single injury car accident early in the morning of Dec. 21, 2017. He was born Dec. 28, 1995 to the very proud parents of Jeff and Carmen Hon, and soon became an only child due to his mother’s horrible death from cancer 6 months later. His dad raised him with help from many. He saw opportunities and responsibilities not typical of a child his age, and early on became widely considered as far beyond his years.
He started Hon Motors at age 15 in the garage of our family home in which he was born, stripping and selling snowmobile parts, an interest he acquired as a young child. He grew that enterprise to include motorcycles, moved to a commercial space in Meridian and within a year doubled that space and gained his Idaho Dealer License. By 2015 he purchased a half acre commercial lot with a 2800 sq. ft. building near home in Nampa and soon began dealing in used vehicles. He received mentoring from several experienced businessmen, many of whom became personal friends, with Roger Worley being pronounced. The business growth was exponential to the point where he outgrew that property and by late 2017 had acquired a 5 acre property with plans to build a large facility next year. By this time he had become the largest vehicle buyer at both Adesa in Boise and Dealers Auto Auction in Nampa, and had 7 full time employees and an office consultant. I am convinced he would have gone far in business. Hon Motors currently has 300-400 vehicles, plus the original power sports component where on-line sales continue. He sold almost 1000 vehicles in 2017. All of these things he accomplished before the age of 22, and of his own motivation.
He and I were always close. After his mother, he became my best friend. He took what he had learned and compassion for others and developed a wide range of friends that he would assist when needed inspite of his 10-14 hour days, 6-7 days a week. Asking what he could get me for Christmas, I told him in lieu of his expensive idea, I’d rather only spend time with him away from work. So it is that he and some friends were repairing a snowmachine at a friend’s in Boise (which he intended me to ride with him Christmas weekend) after work Wednesday. It appears to me he fell asleep at the wheel.
He leaves his dad, Jeff, grandparents Bev Hon, Ron Hon (Cheryl), Uncles Jim (Renee) Hon, Mike (Anna) Hon, Floyd (Karen) Uria, Aunts Ronda (Bonnie) Hon, and Sandy (Gary) Mullens, as well as many cousins. He is joining now his mother Carmen Hon and his grandmother Carmen King in heaven, where he will meet his grandfather Floyd Uria.
Words cannot express the huge loss our family has incurred, nor the impact it will have in the future. I would only ask you to pray for my boy, that he be happy, healthy, and a proud addition to Heaven.
Due to timing, the earliest we could post a paper notice is late, but the family invites all who know Gabriel to join us at Holy Apostles Catholic Church in Meridian on Wed., Dec. 27, 2017 at 6:00 p.m. for a brief prayer vigil and opportunity to speak. Funeral mass will be at 11:00 a.m. on his birthday, Dec. 28, 2017, followed by a meal. Internment will be at 2:30 at Morris Hill Cemetery in Boise next to his beloved mother. Services are under the direction of Cloverdale Funeral Home.
