Jane Stout

Jane (Shaw) Stout (age 85) of Meridian, Idaho (formerly Riggins, Idaho) passed away at St. Alphonsus Hospital in Boise on Thursday, January 4, 2018, from complications after suffering a serious stroke on New Year’s Day. She was surrounded by the loving company of her children and grandchildren. Jane was born on August 10, 1932, in Kooskia, Idaho, to James Madison and Eleanor Olive (Lytle) Shaw. She joined two sisters (Velma and Norma) and a very loving big brother, Lester. After the death of her father and sister Norma the next year, the family moved to her maternal grandparents’ homestead at Pleasant Valley, a little farming community between Battleridge and Clearwater, Idaho. Olive later moved her family to Stites, Idaho, where Jane enjoyed a wonderful, small-town childhood roaming the surrounding hills and playing with many cousins – especially her dearest cousin Joyce (Lytle) Frazier. Her mom raised a big garden and taught her kids the value of hard work, how to stretch a dollar, and the importance of a deep belief and trust in God’s help. After Olive suffered a stroke, they moved to Riggins, Idaho in 1949, where Olive lived with her oldest daughter and son-in-law (Velma and Jim Summerville); Jane lived with close family friends at the old CC Camp and attended her junior year of high school in Riggins. She met our dad, Lonnie (Chick) Stout, and they were married in June, 1950. Chick worked for the USFS and was transferred to the Fenn Ranger Station, where they lived in the beautiful O’Hara house along the Selway River. Oldest daughter, Glenda, was born in 1951. They moved back to Riggins for good in 1955, where Chick worked as a heavy equipment operator in logging and construction. Eventually he ran the road grader, maintaining roads for the Idaho County Road Department. In 1955, son Mike joined his big sister Glenda and was followed by sisters Norma in 1958 and Carrie in 1971. Jane kept busy as a homemaker raising their four kids, two big gardens and was active in the American Legion Auxiliary, the Riggins schools, and the Riggins Assembly of God church. She made many life-long friends, including her best friend Fern Burman- the Lucy to Jane’s Ethel. After Chick’s death in 1982, Jane focused on raising their youngest daughter, Carrie. She was hired by the Lewis-Clark Head Start Program in 1987 as a teacher’s aide for the Riggins-White Bird Head Start Center. In Jane’s own words, this job was an answer to prayers and made to order for a person whose life-long job had been raising four kids of her own and babysitting for others. It was a very rewarding job! Jane and her sister Velma developed a closer bond after Velma’s husband, Jim, passed away in 1992. These two ladies enjoyed many trips around the back roads of Idaho, always searching for a new huckleberry patch. In 2014, Jane’s daughter Glenda and son-in-law Ken invited her to move to Meridian to share their home. Jane had her own mother-in-law suite there and enjoyed hosting friends and family for coffee and her famous strawberry-rhubarb cake. This move allowed Jane the opportunity to be more involved with daughter Carrie’s family, enjoying her grandsons’ school, church, and sports events. She also became better acquainted with son-in-law Ken’s children and grandchildren, who adored her. If you ever asked Jane about her family, her face lit up as bright as the sun to tell you about them. Jane was preceded in death by her parents, her three siblings, her husband, Chick, daughter, Glenda, grandson, Brian Bosch, and most recently her best friend Fern. She is survived by her son-in-law, Ken Koch (Meridian, ID), son Mike Stout and his wife Jen (Round Mountain, NV), daughter Norma Bosch (Buckley, WA), daughter Carrie and her husband Mike Magette (Meridian, ID), and the legacy of nine grandchildren and their families. Dear friends, who also became like daughters to her, include Annette Barton, Lorinda Hughes, Norma Myers, and Chris Phillips. She will also be missed by her two best “grand-dogs”, Bungee and Jagger, who won her heart and fiercely protected her. Arrangements are under the care of Cloverdale Funeral Home, Boise, Idaho. A graveside service will be held at the Riggins Cemetery on January 8th, 2018 at 2:00 pm with Pastor Cliff Scheline officiating the graveside service. A celebration of Jane’s life to be held later this year. The family would like to thank the nursing staff of St. Al’s Boise on both the Telemetry and Comfort Care floors for the tender loving care they provided Jane and our family during her last days.
