Tribute

On August 2, 2021, Forrest Gary Hayne (Gary), beloved husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, nephew, uncle, and brother passed away at age 82.

Gary was born on June 9, 1939 in Toledo, Ohio to Carolyn Young and Forrest Hayne, and was raised in a loving extended family. He graduated from DeVilbiss High School in 1957. In school, he excelled in mathematics and physics, and he went on to study civil engineering at the University of Toledo, graduating summa cum laude in 1961. Gary always loved the beauty of the Pacific Northwest when visiting as a child, and decided to move to Seattle, Washington after graduation. He attended a civil engineering master’s degree program at the University of Washington, while also working as an engineer for Boeing, where he designed airplane parts. After completing his graduate coursework, he served as a civil engineer for the City of Seattle, designing sections of Interstate 5, and at the Army Corps of Engineers, working on dam design. Gary was blessed with three beautiful daughters from a previous marriage, Mary, Catherine, and Julie. He moved with his family to Boise, Idaho in 1970, where he had accepted a civil engineering position with the USDA Farmer’s Home Administration, later called Rural Development. He continued working there until retirement in 2005.

In 1977, Gary married Carole Taylor. Carole also had three children from a previous marriage, Scott, Shelly, and Shannon. A year later Gary and Carole added their seventh child, Cara, to their blended family.

Gary derived satisfaction in pursuing a career in which he could use his skills to contribute to communities in a region of the country that he loved. He was so smart, even into his 80s, when a grandchild needed help on a complex math problem, he could solve it without hesitation. Gary loved to read and was a fountain of knowledge on any topic. He said he discovered, when he was seven years old, that he could learn to do anything because he could read. Gary also believed in the sacredness of recreation. He had a keen sense of adventure, and found enjoyment in the natural world, piloting small airplanes, boating, fishing, swimming, hiking, sledding, and skiing. Many family vacations were spent camping and visiting national forests. Through these activities, he encouraged his children to turn to the natural world for both enjoyment and solace. Gary was intelligent, quirky, humorous, patient, and kind-hearted. He was generous, loving, and never had an unkind word to say about anybody. Gary loved nothing more than to be surrounded by his family. His family misses him beyond measure.

Gary was preceded in death by his father Forrest Ward Hayne, mother Carolyn Young Massoni, step-mother Lillian Hayne, step-father Alvin Massoni, and sister Cherie Lewis. He is survived by his wife Carole, their children, Scott (Abbie) Tiede, Shelly Sanford , Shannon (Neal) Forrester, Mary Hayne, Catherine (Jeff) Jarriel, Julie Hayne, and Cara (Lee) Rubel, his brother, Kerry B. Hayne, and his aunt, Jean Martin, as well as 11 grandchildren, and 13 great grandchildren.
