Tribute

Darlyne Marie Schmidling Pape passed away peacefully on May 12, 2023 at her home surrounded by family after a long battle with cancer.

Darlyne was born on a dairy farm in Leavenworth, Kansas on November 29, 1934. She was the youngest of five children. In 1955 she graduated from the Registered Nursing Program at Providence Hospital in Kansas City, KS. After a brief career as a nurse, she married Don L. Pape in 1959 and they had six children. Over the next few decades, Darlyne turned the house on Harrison into a welcoming home to all and devoted herself to raising her children in a loving and supportive environment. She encouraged each of them to travel their own path, emphasized education, self-discovery, and open mindedness. She also modeled constant and authentic generosity to others. Darlyne attended thousands of her children's extracurricular events and selflessly helped after her grandchildren were born. She often said her greatest joy in life was being a mother and grandmother. She spent countless hours at the kitchen table in deep conversations over steaming cups of tea with her children, grandchildren and friends.

In 1991 at the age of 57, Darlyne graduated with a BA in Communication/English from Boise State University with honors. Being a non-traditional student didn't stop her from studying abroad in London for a semester, which was a thrilling academic and cultural experience. She returned to the U.K. several times with friends and family to introduce them to Shakespeare plays at the Globe and Stratford-upon-Avon, architecture, culture, and the lifelong British friends she made.

Spirituality was a passion of Darlyne's. Her goal was to better understand both the mystery and reality of what it means to live a spiritual life and share that with others. She became a spiritual director and certified Centering Prayer instructor. Darlyne walked the spiritual path with many friends and directees. She prayed with them, shared books, ideas, and resources to help them discover what she considered the beautiful gift of unconditional love and acceptance just waiting to be fully appreciated and enjoyed. She had a deep and personal understanding of human nature and believed everyone has the ability and desire to deepen their relationship with the divine.

Darlyne is preceded in death by both parents; her siblings; eldest son, Joseph; and her husband, Don. She is survived by five children: son Mike (Marci) Pape of Boise, ID; son Jim (Nicole) Pape of Boise, ID; son Ben (Jennie Weitz) of Boise, ID; daughter Kathleen (Alex Korahais) Pape of Seattle, WA; and daughter Amy (Anthony) Lemon of Silver Spring, MD; eleven grandchildren: Calvin, Emily, Megan, Sophie, Laura, Josie, Carlie, Joseph, Nate, Sam, and Hannah Marie, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

The family would like to thank St. Luke's Home Health Care, Hospice and the fifth-floor hospital orthopedic nursing staff. They would also like to thank Dr. Dan Zuckerman & staff and Dr. Leslie Stubbs & staff as well as Dr. Bonnie Vestal for their wonderful care and guidance over the decades.
