Tribute

Hank Han-kyo Lim, 56, peacefully passed away on January 23, 2023 in Spokane, WA.

Hank was born in Seoul, Korea to Sindy and John Lim on October 14th, 1966. His family moved to Boise, Idaho when he was six years old and spent his childhood there. After graduating from Capital High School in Boise, Idaho, he attended the University of Idaho with a degree in electrical engineering. During his school years he competed and taught as a black belt in Tae Kwon Do. At the University of Idaho, he received an Air Force scholarship and participated in Air Force ROTC and was active in Kappa Sigma fraternity. As a bright, driven entrepreneurial electrical engineer during the “dot com” days, he helped develop world-changing technologies for Micron, Samsung, and many Silicon Valley technical startup companies. Hank was an engineer microchip inventor recognized with multiple US patents in computer memory technology. Hank was a voracious life-long, self-educator who completed his formal education with a masters in Electrical Engineering from Santa Clara University.

During his time in the San Francisco Bay area, he developed and nurtured a passion for sailing and bought his first sailboat. Near the end of his engineering career, at the young age of 37, he commissioned the build of Further, a 37-foot blue water Hallberg Rassy sailing yacht. Hank took delivery of her in Sweden, and Hank and Further’s adventures led them from the North Sea of Europe, to the Mediterranean, across the Atlantic Ocean, multiple seasons in the Caribbean, through the Panama Canal, and eventually up North America to her current harbor in Seattle, WA. Hank’s adventures lasted several years and took him half-way around the world…literally.

Hank then traded in salt-water adventures for the mountains, calling central Idaho home. In McCall, he enjoyed mountain sports, friends and family gatherings, and keeping the fireplace stoked for the eight months of winter.

Through no fault of his own, Hank battled through many physical ailments. He bravely faced lymphoma treatment which ultimately caused his heart failure. He approached treatment for his heart failure as most things in his life with vigor and strong action on the best information available. At the time of his passing, Hank was two-years on a heart transplant list.

Hank was preceded in death by his parents, Sindy and John Lim. He is survived by his sisters Roy and Anna, niece Sydney, nephews Jens and Tobin and brothers-in-law Pete and Spyder.

People best describe Hank as gentle, kind, thoughtful, intelligent, talented, peaceful, generous, and fun-loving. He is incredibly missed.
