Homer Leroy Clough
June 7, 1923 – January 7, 2019
Homer was born in 1923 to C.N. (Bud) Clough and Mable (Garrett) Clough. He was saved at the Buffalo Church of the Nazarene in Buffalo, Kansas at the age of sixteen and felt a call to preach a year later.
Homer graduated from Buffalo High School in 1941 and worked for a year before entering college. He rode the train from Kansas to Nampa, Idaho to attend Northwest Nazarene College, staying with his Uncle Albert and Aunt Barbara. He worked multiple jobs, including cutting meat, to put himself through school. He graduated with a major in History and minor in Religion in 1946. While in college, he met Ruth Elaine Maxey, who was part of the large Maxey family with five brothers and three sisters. They fell in love and were married at Nampa First Church of the Nazarene on September 3, 1944.
After graduation, Homer and Ruth began their first pastorate in Carthage, South Dakota, where their first child, Tom was born. They then moved to pastorates at Craig, Halltown, and Sarcoxie, Missouri and Baxter Springs, Kansas. During this time his family grew with the addition of two children: Brent and Elaine.
In the summer of 1959, Homer moved his family to Nampa, Idaho and through open doors that God provided, began to teach in the Boise school district, where he taught World Geography and supervised Driver Education in the summers. He earned his master’s degree from Oregon State University in 1967 and became the full-time Supervisor of Safety and Transportation for the Boise School District in 1969.
Homer retired in 1985 after 25 years with the Boise School District. He and Ruth wintered in Yuma, Arizona for 14 years. As Ruth’s health declined, Homer became her caregiver until she entered a care facility in 1999. Homer faithfully visited her until her death in January of 2007.
On Valentine’s Day, 2010, Homer married Janice Webb whom he had met at Senior Camp at Trinity Pines in Cascade, Idaho.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, and one brother as well his first wife Ruth. He is survived by his brother Larry Clough and wife Nancy; son Tom Clough and wife Jean; son Brent Clough; daughter Elaine Clough and partner Scott Hirsch; grandchildren James Clough and wife Renae, Brenda Brosa and husband John, Fawn Ward and husband Raj Kumar; five great-grandchildren Timothy Clough, Hailey Clough, Zak Clough, Avery Brosa, and Silas Brosa. When Homer married Janice, he gained an additional daughter Jennifer Webb; grandsons Carlos Gonzalez and Christian Medrano; and great-granddaughter Eliza Medrano. He was very proud of his family!
