Joan Gail VonSteen

February 20, 1934 ~ February 2, 2019 (age 84) 84 Years Old

Tribute

Joan Gail Romer VonSteen, (1934-2019) age 84, died peacefully of natural causes on February 2, 2019 at her home in Meridian, Idaho.  Joan was born to Galen Paul Harrold and Ruby Victoria Harrold on February 20, 1934 in Omaha, Nebraska.

Joan moved to Idaho with her family from Nebraska when she was 9 years old.  She always felt privileged to have lived a rural life attending a one-room schoolhouse.  Her family lived in the Franklin Community, a small town just North of Nampa.  Along with her family, she attended the Franklin Community Church. During one summer at a youth group revival crusade in Meridian, Idaho, Joan accepted Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior. It was from this point where Joan began living her life faithfully for God.

Joan attended junior and senior high school in Nampa, Idaho, where she graduated in 1952.  The following year she attended the College of Idaho. She then started nurse’s training at St. Luke’s Hospital and graduated with her Nursing Degree in 1956.

Joan met her first husband, Morris Romer, at the doctor’s office where she worked and soon discovered they had many mutual friends from Kuna.  They where married on June 14, 1957. They were married thirty years and had three children.

Joan enjoyed her nursing profession and was an active member of AORN - Association of Operating Room Nurses.  When Joan was not at the St. Luke’s Hospital working, she enjoyed weekends with her family in Cascade, cooking, taking family pictures, playing cards, visiting friends and loved ones. Joan attended Cole Community Church where she was involved in many ministries and bible studies over the last 50 years.

Joan was a beautiful and loving mother. She cared deeply for her family and everyone she knew.  She was honest, hardworking, and had a generous spirit. She would give anyone who needed either a simple meal, or a heart felt encouraging card. This was the result of Joan’s love for Christ. Her family is blessed from her Christ-filled life.

After the loss of Morris, Joan was blessed to meet the second love of her life, Dale VonSteen.  They were married on December 23, 1989 and lived in the Meridian area.

Joan continued working at St. Luke’s until she and Dale retired. They enjoyed many years of RV travel with the Kavemen Travelers Chapter and Good Sam’s Club. Together they also served as the State Directors of the Idaho State Organization.

Joan is survived by her husband, Dale, 4 children: Richard Romer  (Kammy), Lisa Dinwiddie (Paul), Gayla Whipple (Greg), and Keri Kaiser, 12 grandchildren, 17 great grandchildren, and her brother, Max Harrold (Carolyn).

She was preceded in death by her father (Galen Harrold), mother (Ruby Harrold), first husband (Morris Romer), son (Scott VonSteen), and Granddaughter (Morrisa Whipple).
