He is survived by his brothers Robert and Dan and his sister Sharon, daughter Danielle, grandchildren Kyle and Tressa, nephews Michael, Jason and Alan.

Tom fought valiantly to overcome the diseases. He was grateful for all help that was given him and never complained about his condition. He was especially thankful for the outstanding friendship and loving care provided by Jill Iverson and Hudson Clark.

Tommy was born on June 29, 1944, in Mobile, Alabama to Mel and Nannie Shirley. He grew up in Santa Barbara and was very active in sports. He studied Economics at Santa Barbara City College and worked at a number of jobs around Santa Barbara, a town he loved and called home. He served honorably in the US Army and was stationed in Germany as part of the medical team.

Tom had a passion for sports, cats, poker and Dr. Pepper.  He also loved to rescue feral cats and feed and rehabilitate them.   He was an avid bowler and won a number of championships.

Tommy was known for his intelligence, quick wit, his infectious smile, and his kind, humble and compassionate spirit. His Physical Therapist said that he worked diligently to improve his health. Even when therapy was tough and painful, he would tease and joke with them.

Tommy was preceded in death by his father, Mel, and his mother, Nannie. Plans are being made for his return to Santa Barbara, his final resting place
