Tribute

Robert “Bob” Dale Funderburg, age 80, of Boise, Idaho, passed away on January 24, 2023 at his home surrounded by his loving family. Born in Boise, Idaho on March 28, 1942 to Ermin “Fundy” and Florence “Flossie” Funderburg as the middle of their three sons, he attended Whitney & Hawthorne Elementary, South & West Jr. High, and graduated from Borah High School in 1960. College started at Boise Jr. College, and after a transfer to Idaho State College, Bob graduated in January of 1966 with a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry and a Minor in Mathematics. While in Pocatello Bob was introduced to Carol Eddy and after a fun courtship, the two of them married on April 9, 1966 when Bob was offered a job at the Idaho State Health lab and Carol told him he was not going to Boise without her.
In October, 1969 Bob made a career change and started working as a radiation physicist for the Idaho Health Department Engineering Division where he inspected radioactive materials users and x-ray equipment. That career later moved him to Baton Rouge, Louisiana in 1987, then Sacramento, California in 1988 and, after working a variety of different positions with the state, he took an early retirement in 2001. Bob and Carol immediately returned home to Boise to be closer to family: especially the grandkids.
Never one to sit still, Bob had a variety of hobbies through the years. He was an avid bowler and made many friends while bowling on many leagues; at the age of 72 he bowled his first 300 and he bowled league right up until he became ill. Bob studied genealogy; he and Carol discovered antiquing together and Bob learned to refinish furniture; built doll houses for his granddaughters; took up stamp collecting; played Bridge regularly with friends; loved gardening; and even enjoyed the challenge of repairing the rental homes himself. It was in the last 3 years that Bob took up knitting on a loom and he knit many pairs of slippers and bowling shoe covers for family and friends.
Bob loved to travel and he shared several trips with his family through the years. After many friends talked up the great times they had on cruises, Bob and Carol booked the first family cruise to the Carribean over Christmas week in 2010 and in his words, “this was a moment in our life that will be long remembered.” They were hooked! There were 5 cruises in total they shared with their family, taking them to the East and West Carribean Isles, Puerto Rico, Alaska, and the Mexican Riviera. Reminiscing on our favorite memories just a few weeks ago, it was clear that Bob’s favorite was just being with his wife, kids, and grandkids and seeing everyone having fun together. He put the “Fun” in “Funderburg.”
Bob was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Jim Funderburg. He is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Carol Funderburg of Boise; three sons, Bill (Anita Dickinson) Funderburg of Sacramento, California, Tim (Michelle) Funderburg of Boise, and Eric (Katy) Funderburg of Boise; brother Gary (Denise) Funderburg of Jerome; grandchildren Keevin Funderburg of Boise, Devin Funderburg of Moscow, Kierra (Brian) Funderburg-Cartwright of Moscow, Tarrin Funderburg of Idaho Falls, Brilynne Funderburg of Boise, Kylee Funderburg of Boise; as well as nephews, nieces, and their families.
