Violet Devette Metzger

It is with great sadness that the family of Violet D. Metzger announces her passing after a brief illness on Tuesday, August 07, 2018, at the age of 96. Violet will be lovingly remembered by her six children; Larry Metzger (Trudy), Jerry Metzger, Peggy Orcutt (Dick), Christine Metzger (Smylie), Wanda Terry (Tim) and Leila Kerschensteiner (Harold). Violet will also be fondly remembered by her 13 grandchildren, 27 great grandchildren, and one great-great grandchild. Violet was preceded in death by her loving husband Lester C. Metzger, daughter Amanda J. Metzger, mother Cora E.Smith, sister Elaine Smith, and brother Lyle Smith.  
Violet was born in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho on November 27, 1921 to Cora E. (Downhour) and William C. Smith .
Violet grew up in the Nampa area and married Lester on August 24, 1944 in the Boise Valley Church of the Brethren. Lester operated a farm near the church where they had four children. Violet contributed to the family household with her canning skills and was kept busy caring for their four young children. Violet was known throughout the church community for her wonderful communion bread. They eventually moved to Boise and were able to purchase their first home, where Wanda and Leila were added to the family. Violet and Lester were very active in their church, Mountain View Church of the Brethren in Boise. They both sang in the church choir and often sang duets for the church services. Their beautiful voices were true blessings to everyone who were lucky enough to hear them, and their musical talents were passed down to all their children. As her children left the home, Violet focused many years on her grandchildren and activities with Lester. Violet and Lester joined a local bowling league which they enjoyed for many years. Violet followed Lester to Outlook, WA to help him with his new ministry in the early 80’s. Due to Lester’s failing health, they returned to their home in Boise after several successful years of ministry. After Lester passed away in 2000, Violet resided in numerous health care facilities in the Boise area residing at Life Care Treasure Valley until her death. 
Funeral services for Violet will be officiated by Edward Kerschensteiner at Cloverdale Funeral Home on Friday, August 10, 2018 at 1 p.m. in the chapel. Viewing for the public will be at 11:30 a.m. Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. at Cloverdale Memorial Park. A reception for friends and family will be at Mountain View Church of the Brethren, 2823 N. Cole Road, Boise, Idaho at 2:30 p.m.
