I am Linda's older sister, and though I live in California, was privileged to be in daily contact with her (primarily via email) from the time she received her diagnosis. Pulmonary fibrosis is an incredibly debilitating, painful and inevitably fatal disease; and I was able to offer close support throughout the ups and downs associated with its progression. Difficult and oftentimes frustrating as they were, those days and years turned out to be the most precious days of our relationship; and, in concert with Linda, I learned how to make every day count!
Linda ultimately took charge of her departure, skillfully orchestrating it so as to minimize the pain for everyone. Given the same circumstances, I could never have imagined being able to summon the focus and equanimity necessary to pull it off—but, with the help of her loving husband Don, she did. She's definitely my "hero."
In Linda, the world lost a devoted lover and caretaker of animals, wild and domestic; but her work with animals is as much Don's project as her own, and the beautiful, sprawling house she and Don designed together and built at that bend in the Boise River will continue to nurture a large, happy, healthy population of birds, squirrels, raccoons and beavers. (And, of course, their beloved cat Ping!) Who could ask for a more fitting memorial?
